LIEBEration 175: Tattoo

We are nearing the virtual conclusion of LIEBEration 175, a queer Holocaust history performance art and photography project. The meta-narrative of today’s action mirrors and echoes my own. The image I now carry on my right forearm has been growing in my heart for a decade. It is a reappropriation of the monstrous slogan “Work Sets You Free” which is iron-wrought on the gates of Sachsenhausen. On this quest for freedom I was guided by it from the very beginning, at our silliest or most defiant, in solitude or connecting to others, seeking it out in literature, music and nature, conjuring, professing and manifesting it, eating & breathing it. Finally, on June 21, 2012 in Oranienburg just blocks from the camp I witnessed it come forth on my body. Love. Liebe. Любовь.
